ANU China Green Impact - Spring Events
In early April 2022, ANU China Centre launched the ANU China Green Impact programme in support of the ANU Below Zero initiative, taking the lead in environmental protection and sustainable development. On Arbor Day, 12 March 2022, ANU China Centre sent out an invitation to all ANU alumni and students to participate in the Ant Forest low carbon tree planting activity online together, using the energy gained from daily Alipay exercise step counts and spending to water our 'ANU China trees' together. The campaign has received a positive response from ANU students, who are actively joining the tree planting group and using each other's positive energy to water the saplings so that they can grow with us and contribute to the community. Until May this year, ANU's Chinese students continued to water our shared 'China Tree' daily, having already poured 279,184g of energy into a fir tree planted in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan, China, leaving them 51,575g short of their target. Thank you for every little bit of energy they contribute to the environment and go ANUers!
On 22 April 2022, the Australian National China Centre invited the Director of the Convention on Biological Diversity Advocacy Program of the WWF (Switzerland) Beijing Representative Office: Nan Li, to give a presentation on the Living Planet Report. The event was open to all interested parties, not just ANU students. Through vivid examples and an interesting format, Ms. Nan Li made all the students and others who attended the event start to have a more comprehensive view about environmental protection.
On 23 April 2022, students from ANU Chengdu Study Hub, led by the manager of Chengdu Study Hub Liz, visited the Longqiao Bear Rescue Centre in Sichuan to visit rescued injured bears and learn about the stories behind animal rescue. During the event, they sold souvenirs from around ANU and the students who volunteered to buy them donated all the proceeds to the Longqiao Bear Rescue Centre. This is a great example where students from ANU Chengdu took a practical step to help the environment. Xiaomin (Gina) Wang, a PhD student from the University of Hong Kong said, "I was very grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the importance of environmental protection and to be surprised by the range of initiatives and actions that the Australian National University is taking to protect the environment." She said she was looking forward to what the ANU China Centre would bring next quarter.
The ANU China Centre says it will be launching a new ANU China Green Impact event every quarter after that. In June, ANU will be launching pop-up style cafes promoting environmental awareness and sustainability in several cities across China. Let's all look forward to continuing to do something positive for our environment.
