Council Election 2025 - Academic Staff (Faculties Member) – Casual Vacancy 

On Monday 7 April the University Secretary received a resignation from Dr Liz Allen, who is one of two academic staff members on ANU Council. To fill this position, the Returning Officer will run an election for a casual vacancy, until the term ends on 29 September 2026.

Nominations for this casual vacancy will open from today, Thursday 10 April 2025.

The ANU Council is the governing body of the University. The role of the ANU Council and its committees is to provide strategic oversight and direction for the entire institution.

There are currently 15 positions on the ANU Council consisting of the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, seven external members appointed by the Federal Minister for Education, members elected by the academic and professional staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as the Chair of the Academic Board who is a non-voting member of the ANU Council. 

Nominations for the election of Academic Staff (Faculties Member) – Casual Vacancy will open from today, noting that the member:

  • Must have duties involving both teaching and research (“the Academic staff (Faculties) member”).

To be eligible to nominate, in addition to the above requirements concerning research and teaching duties, you must have been paid a salary by the University on payday Thursday 10 April 2025, and on that date have been employed as a full-time or part-time standard or fixed term member of the academic staff at or above the grade of academic level A. 

If you are interested in finding out more about what a role on the Council involves, what it means to be a Council member, and the election process an information session is to be held on Monday 14 April at 10.00am online via Zoom. If you are interested in attending the session, please email the Returning Officer via returning.officer@anu.edu.au and a link will be sent to you.

Nominations should be emailed to returning.officer@anu.edu.au. A nomination must be signed by two persons eligible to vote in the election (other than the candidate) and must contain the signed consent of the candidate to the nomination.

Nominations will close strictly at 5.00pm (AEST) on Tuesday 29 April 2025.

If there is more than one nomination for the position, an electronic ballot will be held.  Should an election be required, voting links will be issued on Thursday 1 May 2025. 

The member elected will hold office on a casual basis, until 29 September 2026. The elected person will need to make themselves available on Friday 30 May 2025 for their first ANU Council meeting.
