Celebrate 75 years of ANU across 75 cities around the world!

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA:

Join fellow alumni and friends in Melbourne for an evening of celebration on Friday 22nd April 2022, 5.30-7.15pm AEST.

Hosted by the Hon Julie Bishop, ANU Chancellor, and Professor Brian P. Schmidt, ANU Vice-Chancellor and President, this special event will bring together our alumni community in Melbourne as we acknowledge all that makes our University special.

The evening will be opened by ANU father-daughter duo, Dr Abul Rizvi (BEc '82, GradDipPubEcPol '83) and Jamila Rizvi (BComm '10, LLB '10). Dr Abul Rizvi is an Independent Australia columnist and former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Immigration, and Jamila is a best-selling author for adults and children and an opinion columnist for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.

Jamila Rizvi (BComm '10, LLB '10)

Jamila is a best-selling author for adults and children, and a well-known opinion columnist for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. She is Chief Creative Officer at Nine's Future Women and host of the Weekend Briefing podcast, a board member of the Wheeler Centre, and an ambassador for PLAN International and the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation.

She has previously advised the Australian Government on gender equality, childcare, media and employment. She has also been named in the Australian Financial Review's 100 Women of Influence and is a 2020 Women and Leadership Australia award winner.

Jamila holds degrees in law and commerce from the ANU and was previously President of the Students' Association and a member of the University Council.

Dr Abul Rizvi ( (BEc '82, GradDipPubEcPol '83)

Abul is a frequent media commentator on population, immigration and its impact on Australia's economic directions. His work on population and immigration policy dates back to his being the Immigration Department's Chief Financial Officer, from 1991 to 1995, and his management of Australia's migration program from 1995 to 2007. His work and research over the years has led to major policy changes - including the expansion of Australia's international education industry, skilled temporary migration, and working holiday makers as a pathway to a permanent migration program.

He was awarded the Public Service Medal and the Centenary Medal for services to the development and implementation of Australian immigration policy. He also recently featured in the SBS Documentary "Who Gets to Stay in Australia".

Abul is an economics, accounting and public policy graduate from ANU. He recently completed a PhD in population and immigration policy.
