[ON DEMAND] Alumni Panel and Networking- Future of Asia and the Pacific

The College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP) presents 'The Future of Asia and the Pacific'. CAP Dean, Professor Helen Sullivan, will chair a panel of distinguished alumni, as they address the future of the region from a variety of perspectives, disciplines and experiences. The discussion will include an examination of trends of foreign policy and diplomacy in the region, the environmental challenges of accelerating climate change, and equitable development opportunities for the region in the future.

Following the panel discussion, CAP is hosting an informal networking event. This event will allow for meaningful. in-person engagement between students and alumni, and mingling and reunion between some of the finest academics at ANU. Discussions from the alumni panel event can be continued here, with everyone encouraged to share their thoughts on the future of the Asia Pacific region with their peers, and to engage in deeper personal discussion with some of the panellists.

Speaker Bios

• John Zubrzycki- Asian Studies '82

  John Zubrzycki graduated from the ANU in 1984 after majoring in South Asian History and Hindi. He went on to work in India as a diplomat and foreign correspondent, before joining "The Australian" newspaper as a senior writer and deputy foreign editor until 2013. He is the author of four books on India, most recently The House of Jaipur: The Inside Story of India's Most Glamorous Royal Family. In 2019 he completed a PhD in Indian history from UNSW. As the 2021 Merewhether Fellow at the State Library of NSW, he has been researching links early links between Australia and Asia in the field of popular culture. His forthcoming The Shortest History of India (Black Inc) will be published in May 2022.

• Kate Walton- Asian Studies '09

  Kate Walton graduated from the ANU in 2009 with a Bachelor of Asian Studies (Hons), where she majored in Indonesian, Japanese, and Asian politics. Kate lived in Indonesia from 2012 to 2019, where she worked for a variety of local women's NGOs and several international development projects from USAID, GIZ, and the Asian Development Bank. She also co-founded a feminist NGO called Perkumpulan Lintas Feminis Jakarta (Jakarta Feminist) and remains their Communications Manager until today. Kate now primarily works as a development consultant on issues relating to gender, health, governance, and communications, alongside being a freelance journalist for outlets such as Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy, and The Interpreter. • Malcom Brailey - Master of International Relations '03

  Malcom Brailey graduated from the ANU in 2003 with a Masters of Arts in International Relations from RSPAS. Before attending ANU, Malcom was an infantry officer in the Australian Army, serving in Australia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Malcom later had a distinguished career in the Australian Public Service, serving as a defence advisor and diplomat in Indonesia, Afghanistan and across Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific. In academia, Malcolm has been as Associate Research Fellow at the RSIS, Singapore, and at the Australian Army Land Warfare Studies Centre, Canberra. In the private sector, Malcom was co-founder of the national security and commercial intelligence advisory firm Levenhall, and founder of the conflict research and communications firm, Kresna Strategic. Malcom is currently the Area Manager Asia Pacific for Fortescue Future Industries, a leading global energy company dedicated to the transformation of energy markets through expansion of renewable energy and green hydrogen projects.

• Sarah Sloan -Asia-Pacific Studies '12, Grad Dip Asia-Pacific Studies '12

  Sarah Sloan is the Head of Government Affairs & Public Policy for Australia and New Zealand at Palo Alto Networks. In her position, she advises the company's leadership on a range of local cyber and technology policy issues, builds strategic relationships across all tiers of Government and acts as a trusted private sector adviser to Government. Prior to joining the private sector, Sarah spent 10+ years working in Government, predominantly in cybercrime and cybersecurity. She has a proven track record of delivering results at the operational and strategic levels of government and is passionate about improving Australia and New Zealand's cyber security posture. Sarah is a graduate of the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) and Bachelor of Asia and the Pacific Studies. She also holds a Graduate Diploma of Asia and the Pacific Studies (Japanese), Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, and a Master of International Laws, where she wrote her thesis on international norms and Cyber Security.
