[ON DEMAND] Panel discussion: Revisiting University House

About the Event 

Hear from a panel of distinguished alumni and community members as they share what University House means to them, and the formative, enduring impact it has had on their personal and professional lives. Learn about how the restoration of this wonderful heritage-listed precinct will ensure its future stays true to the very best elements of its past. 

Presenters 

Dr Louise Moran (BA '68) 
Louise is an ANU baby (though Master Dale Trendall didn't allow children on the premises) as her family arrived at the ANU in 1952 and University House has been part of her life, all her life. Louise made up for that boycott in her 20s when she spent many days and nights at the House working on conferences for the Centre for Continuing Education. Her father was the first Bursar, her mother a founder and stalwart of the Ladies Drawing Room, into which group she drew Louise from the late 1990s until, as Convenor, the group came to an end in 2018. Louise made her career in university administration, distance education and international education and is now happily 'retired'. 

Ms Claire Sheridan (BA '18, BSc '19) 
Claire is the Senior Collections Advisor for the ANU, a role which has awoken her passion for mid-century furniture and design, and engaged her with University House and its extraordinary collection. Her most recent contribution to the University House recovery is through leading the team that toiled for weeks to clear 68 years' detritus from the Tunnel and adjacent storage rooms. A number of the items recovered will go on permanent display when University House reopens. 

Dr Chris Wallace (BA '80, PhD '15) 
Chris entirely missed University House as an undergraduate but made up for it as a post-grad student as she frequented Fellows Garden for everything from work meetings to friendly Friday afternoon refreshments. In between, she became a political journalist and historian. Her doctoral thesis includes an authoritative account of then post-graduate resident (and later Australian prime minister) Bob Hawke's University House fish pond swim. Wallace's dream is to live full-time in a North Wing suite should such an opportunity ever arise.
