Future of multilateral cooperation: development and peace security architecture

Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs Public Lecture

The post-Cold War order that once supported multilateral diplomacy has eroded over the past few years. Global conflicts are becoming more fragmented, multi-layered, and transnational. Comprehensive peace agreements are rarer, and what used to be tried-and-tested peace tools and international mechanisms are less effective.

In this Public Lecture, Dr. Comfort Ero, Crisis Group’s President and CEO, will discuss this moment of transition in conflict prevention and mediation across the globe, a point where the old system of multilateral peacemaking is fading, but a new one is not yet fully formed.

Speaker
Dr. Comfort Erowas appointed Crisis Group’s President & CEO in December 2021. She joined the organisation as West Africa Project Director in 2001 and rose to become Africa Program Director and then, in January 2021, Interim Vice President.

Dr. Ero has spent her entire career working in or on conflict-affected countries. In between her two tenures at Crisis Group, she served as Deputy Africa Program Director for the International Centre for Transitional Justice (2008-2010) and, prior to that, Political Affairs Officer and Policy Advisor to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, UN Mission in Liberia (2004-2007). She has a PhD from the London School of Economics, University of London. Dr. Ero sits on various boards and advisory bodies.

Chair
Professor Kirsten Ainley is Director of the ANU Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, and a feminist scholar of international relations who works on gender and justice in conflict-affected states. She is Co-Chief Investigator of the UKRI GCRF Gender, Justice and Security Hub, which is a five-year project working at the overlap of Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality, Goal 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions, and the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda.
