Gideon Haigh will be in conversation with Tim Gavel on Gideon's new book On the Ashes, covering the greatest sporting contest of all. Nothing compares to the Ashes. The Ashes is where hope, expectation, magic and chagrin flourish in equal measure, and performance is permanently burnished.

From over three decades of covering the Ashes, Gideon Haigh has brought together, on the eve of a new series, an enduring vision of this timeless contest between Australia and England-the world's oldest sporting rivalry-from the colonial era to the present day.

In On the Ashes, from 'Australia's finest writer on cricket' (The Times), Gideon Haigh captures over a century and a half of Anglo-Australian cricket, from W. G. Grace to Don Bradman, from Bodyline to Laker's Match, from Botham's Miracle at Headingley to the phenomena of Patrick Cummins and Ben Stokes, today's Ashes captains.

Gideon Haigh was born in England and lives in Australia, with a parent from each. He was eight when he attended his first Ashes Test and 24 when he reported his first Ashes series. Gideon has written about cricket in The Australian, The Times, The Guardian, the Financial Times and in over 30 books, which have won him English Cricket Society awards and Premier's awards in three states. Tim Gavel OAM currently works on media and strategy for Sport Integrity Australia and hosts On Side, the official podcast of Sport Integrity Australia. Tim commentated for over 30 years on a variety of sports on ABC Grandstand, including seven Olympic Games and seven Commonwealth Games. He has been three-time ABC Sports Broadcaster of the Year and was named the ACT Local Hero in 2008 for services to broadcasting and charity in Canberra.

The vote of thanks will be given by award-winning author, Frank Bongiorno AM, who is a Professor of History, Research School of Social Sciences ANU and President of the Australian Historical Association.

This event is in association with Harry Hartog Bookshop. Books will be available for purchase on the evening in the Cultural Centre foyer. Pre-event book signings will be available from 6pm, and available again after the event.
