Myanmar Jade Traders in the China-Myanmar Border: The Costs and Benefits of the Social Inclusion at Varying Depth in the Era of Livestream E-Commerce

Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

This study explores the experiences of Myanmar jade traders operating along the China-Myanmar border, particularly Ruili City, focusing on their social inclusion at varying levels in response to the evolving economic model of the jade industry, especially in the contemporary context of the rapidly expanding livestream e-commerce industry. Through a combination of field research and interviews, this paper examines how different traders socially integrate in different degrees and the impacts on traders’ access to resources, market opportunities, and community networks. The study highlights the complexities of economic participation, social inclusion, and panethnic solidarity. By analyzing the intersection of cross-border trade, digital platforms, and social dynamics, this research provides nuanced insights into the evolving landscape of jade commerce and the implications for Myanmar traders navigating this border economy.
