Restorative approaches to wildlife crimes in South Africa
Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific
Join Ashleigh Dore in a discussion on the harm that occurs from wildlife crimes in South Africa and explore a novel approach to justice for these and other environmental crimes.
Restorative justice is well established in many jurisdictions with the United Nations confirming it is an inclusive, flexible and participatory approach to crime. This presentation showcases a pilot project from South Africa exploring restorative justice approaches to wildlife crimes.
This presentation will detail the harm resulting from wildlife related crimes in South Africa, the approach to restorative justice the pilot project has taken and key outcomes and learnings of the project to date. While informed by learnings from South Africa, this presentation will share best practice to inform restorative justice approaches in other jurisdictions.
This project and seminar is made possible through the generous support of the WWF Khetha Programme, USAID, GreenMatter, the Harry Crossly Foundation and the Lewis Foundation.
