Matildas waltz in as Australia’s Word of the Year |
The soaring popularity of the Australian women's soccer team after their semi-final run at this year's FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 has seen experts at ANU pick Matilda as their Word of the Year. The team name (Matildas, or Tillies for short) and singular form (Matilda) were everywhere as Matildas mania swept the country, with Australians transfixed by every minute of play.
The Matildas' semi-final against England was the most-watched TV program in decades in Australia, reaching more than 11 million people. Each year the Australian National Dictionary Centre, based at ANU, selects a word or expression that has gained prominence in the Australian landscape over the past 12 months.
The Centre's Director Dr Amanda Laugesen said this year's choice was easy given the massive popularity of the team and the word's long history in Australian English. It also reflects the growth of interest in women's team sports. Read more

Meet Greta Cooper, an inspiring student at the ANU School of Art & Design, currently completing her Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours), and this year’s chosen designer of the 2023 Graduating Exhibition logo. A Perfect Storm: COVID, Collapse of the Property Sector, and Local Government Debt in China |

Local government debt skyrocketed during the last years of China's zero COVID polices and has continued to rise unabated, troubling Beijing and rattling international financial markets. Professor Jean Oi, in collaboration with the Australian Centre on China in the World, will share her research on the causes of this dilemma and reflect on solutions that Beijing is proposing to handle the problem. |

Australian Media, PRC Migrants, and the Politics of Social Cohesion |

Social cohesion has been identified as a key element of Australia's national interest, underpinning Australia's prosperity and security. The media plays an important role in building social cohesion. As part of the ANU China Seminar Series, this presentation discusses how exposure to media content about the People’s Republic of China and Chinese-Australian communities impact on Australia’s social cohesion objectives.
