Today the Education Minister announced further details on new Government caps on new international student enrolments. 

We know this is a significant announcement for our community and the national higher education sector more broadly.

The caps are subject to the passage of legislation currently being considered in Parliament. The Government will establish National Planning Level (NPL) for new international university student commencements of 145,000 for 2025, a reduction of around 30,000 places nationally. 

This will mean a reduction in our commencing international student numbers from next year, as will be the case for many Australian universities.

The exact numbers are still subject to data verification between universities and the Department of Education. We are working through exactly what this means for ANU, including its financial impact, and will provide a more detailed update to our community here in On Campus next week.

The Facilities and Services Division, including parking and security, is relocating to the Fulton Muir Building #95 in September. The parking office will be closed on 4 September and re-open at Fulton Muir on 5 September. This relocation will reduce the division's footprint to make more effective and efficient use of campus space.

The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) funds a range of services for all students. These services support your physical, personal, cultural, educational and financial wellbeing. This includes clubs, sporting and social events, employment assistance and study support. SSAF also partially funds the works of key ANU associations like ANUSA, Woroni, ANU Sport and ANU Observer. Leni Robredo, the former Vice President of the Philippines will be in conversation with esteemed political journalist Virginia Haussegger. Robredo has been a key figure in Philippine politics due to the ‘pink revolution’ - an increase in support from young Filipinos who wore pink and took to the streets in support of the only female candidate in their country's presidential election otherwise dominated by machismo politics.

Professor Michelle O’Callaghan from the University of Reading will discuss how productive leisure can help understand the kinds of making practised in scribal cultures in early modern England. Michelle will discuss example work produced by scribes working outside of elite households, whose penmanship was both work and recreation.

Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong, warned of the lasting effects of fearmongering rhetoric when delivering the Centre for Asian Australian Leadership's inaugural annual lecture. Minister Wong reflected on the experiences of Asian-Australians in her generation and older when society had a narrative of immigrants as burdens, drains on resources and a threat to cohesion.  

“I believe fearmongering is damaging to our community, but I also believe it is a lost opportunity for our country – the opportunity of being more unified to avoid reproducing conflicts here,” said Minister Wong.

Wear It Purple Day is an annual awareness day for LGBTQIA+ youth where supporters wear purple to foster inclusive environments for queer young Australians. A small token of wearing purple on Wear It Purple day can have a massive impact. By wearing purple and having open discussions about being more inclusive, you can demonstrate to LGBTQIA+ young people that they are respected, celebrated, and supported. 

The University offers LGBTIQA+ Ally Training as part of its commitment to providing a diverse and inclusive campus, free of harassment and discrimination. Sessions are available to the whole ANU community.

The Superstars of STEM program smashes society’s gender assumptions about who can work in science, technology, engineering and maths by creating more visible diverse STEM experts. The two-year program works with 60 female and non-binary participants, with a strong desire to build a media profile, to create a cohort of highly visible diverse role models.  

As well as receiving training, the participants are paired with a high-profile mentor, supported to use their new skills to raise their public profile and visit schools to inspire the next generation. The next program will run from January 2025 – December 2026.
