Historic Indigenous economic framework signed

Indigenous Australians have been given a seat at the table to shape future economic policy through a historic agreement signed by the Federal Government.

The First Nations Economic Partnership was spearheaded by an alliance of committed Indigenous people, together with The Australian National University (ANU).

The agreement was signed on 29 September 2025 and creates a way for shared decisions to be made about reforms to First Nations economic policy, leveraging the resources of government.

First Nations Economic Empowerment Alliance Chair and ANU Vice-President (First Nations), Professor Peter Yu, said the agreement is the first of its kind in Australia.

Discovery of binary stars the first step in creating 'movie of the universe'

A world-first discovery of binary stars could be the first step in building a more complete picture of how our galaxy formed, according to astronomers from The Australian National University (ANU).

The discovery is part of an ambitious 10-year program to scan the entire southern sky every few nights.

The study’s lead author, ANU researcher Dr Giacomo Cordoni, said the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will build an extraordinary “movie of the universe”.

Cyber Security Awareness Month – Multi-factor Authentication

The ANU Information Security Office is hosting a month of tips, events, workshops and prizes for all staff and students as part of Cyber Security Awareness Month.

This week’s focus is Multi-factor Authentication (MFA):

  • MFA requires two or more proof of identity documents to log in to your account.
  • These proofs usually include a passphrase, authenticator app or a fingerprint.
  • MFA protects your account even if one proof of identity is compromised.

Cyber security is for everyone, not just the tech-minded.

Scene on our campus

Have you snapped something that deserves the spotlight? A misty morning on campus, a perfectly timed wildlife cameo, or something that just makes you smile? We’d love to share it in On Campus and give your photography career the kick-off it deserves (well… almost).

This week’s picture comes from Olivia Congdon, Interim Editor of ANU Reporter, who captured a cheeky magpie eyeing off her lunch. “I had to share my avian encounter,” Olivia said. “I respect the hustle.”

Share your photo with us using this form and include a short note about why you chose it and what makes it special to you.

Faces of ANU – Yumin Li

When Yumin Li first arrived in Canberra from Guangzhou, China, what struck him most was the stillness of the city and the warmth of the people. “On one of my first mornings, I went for a walk at Mount Ainslie,” he recalls. “Every time someone jogged past, they smiled and said good morning. That had never happened to me before. It was such a small gesture, but it made me feel welcome straight away.”
