The rundown - what you need to know

The rules around masks at ANU are unchanged for now
  • You still need to wear a mask indoors in all teaching spaces and work areas on campus. There are some exemptions for residences, commercial spaces and certain labs on campus. Find out more

Consideration of changes to mask requirements

  • Following the decision by ACT Government to end the COVID19 Public Health Emergency and relax restrictions across the Territory, as well as other factors around the COVID19 pandemic, the University is proposing a change to our mask requirements.

The proposal is:
  • to keep the requirement for masks in teaching settings until the end of semester (28 October 2022);
  • to keep the requirement for masks in clinical settings - there is no proposed change to this requirement;
  • to remove the mask requirements in all other settings on the ANU Campus from 17 October 2022.

Consultation:
  • A consultation period for these proposed changes has now opened and we invite staff and students to provide any feedback by emailing our Work Health and Safety (WHS) team whs@anu.edu.au by 5pm Tuesday 11 October.
  • Following the close of consultation, a decision will be taken and announced on Friday 14 October.

Bargaining
  • The University has given notice that it is bargaining in relation to a new Enterprise Agreement. Please see below for more information.

Service Effectiveness Assessment survey
  • The 2022 Service Effectiveness Assessment survey is now open until Friday 21 October. Please keep an eye out - eligible staff will receive a unique link via email today. It should only take 15 minutes and the results help us improve our services.

Please keep reading to find out about upcoming events and activities, stories, and other updates including the University's involvement with the Racism. It Stops With Me initiative.
Student Safety and Wellbeing Plan
The Student Safety and Wellbeing team has been working hard to ensure our students are supported and safe on campus.

Our progress update against the Plan:

  • We've appointed Kathleen Kuntz as the new Nurse Practitioner at the ANU Medical Centre. Kathleen provides students with expert and judgement-free advice and support, in a safe environment.
  • Two new case managers have joined our team – including a fluent Mandarin speaker who has worked extensively with international students.
  • The Respectful Relationships Unit and the Student Safety and Wellbeing Team are developing a pilot training program to be implemented in 2023 called Rights, Relationships and Respect at ANU. It will be a blended learning program, including a compulsory bespoke online module, and face-to-face multi sessions on consent and sexuality education.
  • ANU has responded to the student associations' 'Follow through report'. It details our commitment to student safety and the concerns of our students. Read our response from 21 September 2022.
  • Respectful Relationships Unit is launching the Sexual Violence Prevention Toolkit on Tuesday 11 October, 2-4pm. Chanel Contos will be a guest speaker. Chanel founded and led the Teach Us Consent campaign, which made consent mandatory in all Australian schools.
  • The toolkit has been designed for staff and students who have taken up representative positions in the area of sexual violence prevention, as well as staff in key leadership positions across campus. This resource will help to support cultural change in your local area and equip you with evidence-based, best-practice principles.

Racism. It Stops With Me initiative
ANU is now an official supporter of the Australian Human Right's Commission Racism. It Stops With Me initiative. The ANU BIPOC Department were catalysts in bringing this initiative to ANU.

There are some great resources available on the Australian Human Rights Commission's website on how to contribute to a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.

The ANU IDEA Governance Committee (IGC) is currently establishing an anti-racism taskforce to continue to address these challenges.

Please reach out to our Equity and Belonging team if you have any questions about the initiative at belonging@anu.edu.au.

If you need support, our Employee Assistance Program offers a choice of counselling and advisory services for our staff and their immediate families.

Enterprise Bargaining

ANU has given notice that it is bargaining in relation to a new Entreprise Agreement (EA).

The EA sets out the overarching terms and conditions of employment between ANU and its staff. The Agreement is negotiated through a collective bargaining process, and once successfully voted by staff, is registered with the Fair Work Commission.

The University is seeking to hear from staff on key mattters, issues and suggestions for the new EA. For more information on the enterprise bargaining, to access the Notice of Employee Representational Rights (NERR) and to provide feedback, please read the ANU Enterprise Bargaining website.
