Striking a chord for Indigenous musicians

Yamaha Music Australia (YMA) is creating a real difference in the lives and careers of First Nations musicians by philanthropically partnering with Yil Lull Studio at the ANU School of Music.

Yil Lull ('To Sing') Studio, led by Torres Strait Islander musician and ANU School of Music alumnus Will Kepa, is a place for First Nations people to meet, create, share and expand their stories through music.

While you might have heard about Yil Lull Studio, you might not know Will’s story behind the naming of the Yil Lull Studio.

Will recalls how he was gifted the name ‘Yil Lull’ for the studio and it’s a powerful story, which ties together the story of the studio and its name, with the importance of Yil Lull being here at ANU.

Opportunities

The New Colombo Plan 2023 - Applications open

The New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship program is a signature initiative of the Australian Government, which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific region in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduate students to study and undertake internships in the region.

Applications will close on Wednesday 31 May.

Student voice

Dana Throssell, Bachelor of Asian Studies/Bachelor of International Security Studies (Honours) and 2019 Indonesia Scholar

“My time as an NCP scholar to Indonesia played a massive role in not only setting up my transition into the workforce, but also my lasting connection to the country. The opportunity to live, study and work for over a year allowed me to really connect with the culture, hone my language skills, gain in-country work experience, and put myself out of my comfort zone. This led me to completing an ANU International Security Honours about Indonesia on my return and has since opened doors in my professional life - including working with the Australian-ASEAN Youth Strategic Partnership, Australian Indonesian Business Council, and as a consultant at KPMG. Though the year was not without its challenges, I can honestly say that the time I spent as an NCP scholar was unforgettable and is something I will always be grateful for.”
