A window to our past
Skaidrite Darius (pictured) migrated from Latvia after the Second World War. In 1955 she joined the John Curtin School of Medical Research as an accounting machinist.

In 1963, Darius faced a difficult decision when she asked for leave to give birth. Maternity leave did not exist, and the University refused to hold her position. Darius's male colleagues rallied behind her, and the University eventually granted her leave without pay. Undeterred, she became head of the then all-male data processing unit in the 1970s.
