Ensuring no student falls behind
The Student Urgent Relief Fund (SURF) is a lifeline for students like Kane, who was months away from completing his master’s degree when his laptop broke beyond repair. Without the means to replace it, his academic future was suddenly at risk.

“I was in the middle of writing my thesis when my laptop gave out,” Kane recalls. “It was one of those moments where I felt completely stuck. I couldn’t afford a new one, and without it I wouldn’t be able to finish my degree.”
Thanks to SURF and the generosity of the ANU donor community, Kane received the support he needed to get back on track.
Now, he’s set to complete his studies and move forward with his future.
Every donor, whether a staff member or part of the wider The Australian National University (ANU) community, shares a common impact - making a real difference in the lives of our students. In 2024, 304 donors contributed $69,959 to SURF, providing essential support to students in need. ANU employees participated through the University’s Workplace Giving Program, while others gave as part of the annual ANU Spring Appeal, which encouraged our community to donate $24 for 2024 to help students stay on track. Thanks to their generosity, SURF grants provided critical support to 19 students in 2024.
Raffy and Jasmine also faced unavoidable financial burdens in 2024, but with help from the ANU donor community were given the support needed to continue to thrive and build their futures.
I am profusely grateful to the donors who make such schemes possible. It was a huge weight off my shoulders at a time when I was really doing it tough. I thought I might have had to leave campus accommodation and defer the semester. The financial support provided by the SURF grant allowed me to continue with my studies and I am on track to graduate at the end of the year.
- Raffy, 2024 SURF recipient
This award not only eased financial pressure but also reaffirmed my belief in the power of education and opportunity. I hope to use my degree to contribute meaningfully to international policy and diplomacy in the future. [The donors'] generosity has made a real difference in my academic journey, and I am truly appreciative of [their] support.

For Professor Inger Mewburn, Director of Researcher Development at ANU, the power of support is more than just an abstract concept, it’s a lived experience.
Every day, she works with PhD students, witnessing their extraordinary potential. However, she also knows how easily unexpected financial burdens can derail even the most promising academic journeys.
“I come from a working-class background and was the first in my family to attend university,” Inger shares.

“I’ll never forget what it was like to struggle financially during my studies. I walked around with holes in my shoes, lived on noodles, and just tried to make ends meet.
“There was nothing romantic about it; it was hard. It made achieving my goals that much more difficult.”
That’s why when she learned about SURF Inger knew she had to give back.
“A little help can make a huge difference in a student’s life,” she says. “SURF provides urgent, practical support, and I want to be part of that.”
For Inger, stories like Kane, Raffy and Jasmine’s reinforce why she gives.
“No student should have their education put on hold because of an unexpected expense. Whether it’s a broken laptop, medical bills, or the rising cost of living, SURF steps in when students need it most. And I know that every dollar I give goes directly to students who are in real need.”
To Inger, donating to SURF is a way to ensure that bright, determined students can stay focused on their education and their future.
“It’s a small gesture with a big impact,” she says. “And I’m proud to be part of it.”
