Award-winning ANU program to expand across Australia

13 Oct 2025

The Australian National University (ANU) has entered into a commercialisation agreement with ASX-listed OpenLearning Limited to make the University’s award-winning Rights, Relationships & Respect (RRR) program available to Australian corporate and government organisations. It will help the companies meet their obligations under the national Respect@Work framework.

“Rights, Relationships and Respect is the culmination of years of work to tailor respectful relationships education and sexual misconduct prevention to our unique community and institutional context,” Joel Radcliffe, Manager of Inclusive and Respectful Communities at ANU said.

“Backed by ANU’s research expertise and years of experience delivering prevention services across a complex operational environment, we know that when this learning is delivered well and monitored carefully, it has impact far beyond regulatory compliance. As demand for online education on safety and respect grows, we see a critical opportunity for partners to work with our experts to ensure their programs are fit for purpose, safe, and deliver measurable impact."

The Respect@Work legislation was introduced following the landmark 2020 Respect@Work Report from the Australian Human Rights Commission, which found that one-in-three people had experienced workplace sexual harassment in the previous five years.

The report called for a stronger preventative approach and led to significant changes in the Sex Discrimination Act 1984, placing a positive duty on employers to take proactive and reasonable measures to eliminate sexual harassment, discrimination, and victimisation in the workplace.

For corporate and government employers, this means moving beyond reactive complaints processes and embedding a culture of respect through education, awareness, and prevention. Training is a critical component — equipping staff and leaders with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to identify inappropriate behaviour, understand legal and ethical obligations, and respond effectively.

Adam Brimo, CEO of OpenLearning, said the Rights, Relationships & Respect program is one of the most effective and engaging workplace respect courses available in Australia.

“We are proud to work with ANU to make this award-winning program accessible to corporate and government organisations, helping them meet Respect@Work obligations while building safer and more respectful workplaces,” he said.

Developed by the ANU Inclusive and Respectful Communities unit, the RRR program is a highly interactive, evidence-based learning experience designed to build understanding of respectful relationships, sexual harassment, sexual assault, consent, power dynamics and workplace safety.

The program has been widely praised for its authenticity, survivor-centred approach, and practical, real-world scenarios, having already been delivered to more than 13,000 learners at ANU — including staff, students and researchers — with outstanding results:

  • Over 90% satisfaction and learning outcome rates, as evaluated by leading social research academics.
  • Winner of Gold in the 2023 QS Education Awards (Nurturing Values and Ethics category) from over 1,200 international submissions.
  • Praised by learners for its authentic, nuanced scenarios and survivor-centred approach.

The RRR program has been recognised for its innovative use of social learning, combining reflective exercises, realistic workplace scenarios, and nuanced discussions about consent and respect.

Learner feedback highlights the program’s ability to prompt meaningful reflection, challenge assumptions, and equip participants with practical strategies for prevention and response. This engaging and constructive approach to learning is made possible by the OpenLearning platform, RRR offers:

  • Engaging, self-paced, interactive learning that encourages reflection and behavioural change.
  • Customisation to align with each organisation’s policies, values, and industry context.
  • Scalable delivery to support organisations of all sizes and across all sectors.
  • Impact measurement through ongoing data reporting, evaluation, and review.

The collaboration between ANU and OpenLearning will enable corporate and government organisations to access RRR through a tailored onboarding process, including needs analysis, policy integration, and scenario customisation, ensuring that the program is tailored to each organisation’s unique situation to maximise impact.
