Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor Statement on VC salary
The Vice-Chancellor's salary is what was offered to her by the Council and reflects guidance we sought from the Remuneration Tribunal. It was informed by the salaries of university vice-chancellors and leaders of government corporate entities and is appropriate for the unique requirements of ANU as the national university.
The Council has not asked the Vice-Chancellor to reduce her salary. Professor Bell is making a personal sacrifice and leading by example as we implement the changes necessary to return ANU to financial sustainability by 2026.
In considering the University’s financial position, the Council resolved that the University’s recurring cost base must reduce by $250 million by 1 January 2026. The Vice-Chancellor and her executive team will find $150 million of these savings from non-salary expenditure, and reduce salary expenditure by $100 million.
The Vice-Chancellor is the right person to position the University to continue delivering distinctive and excellent education and research in alignment with our national mission.
