VC's update - King’s Birthday Honours
Hi all,
Over the weekend, the King’s Birthday Honours list was announced. I’d like to extend special congratulations to Professor Mark Howden AC FTSE FAA, who received the highest honour, being appointed Companion of the Order of Australia (AC). Mark was recognised for eminent service to environmental science including the global response to climate change, and adaption to both agriculture and tertiary education.
The Honours list recognises outstanding service to community, country and the world. This year, a number of ANU staff, alumni and affiliates have been recognised and we are proud to count such remarkable individuals among our community.
Please join me in saying congratulations to:

WOOHOOOO!! And you can read more about all of this on our website.
I know pausing to celebrate and acknowledge people for their impact is an important thing! And I hope that all the recipients get to have a moment of pride, like we do for them. I’ll be hosting a small celebration to recognise our colleagues and students on behalf of the University in the coming weeks.
I also know that this remains a hard time for our community in so many other ways with so many moving pieces.
Last week we took another step on our journey towards greater financial sustainability as we have released two Change Plan Proposals to our community – one for ITS/CISO and one for PSP. In these Change Plan Proposals, we are proposing to change the shape of both organisations. We are proposing new management structures and organisational structures, but it will also mean a reduction in staff profile. These proposals are built on careful analysis and thought, and respond to the Change Principles we agreed to as a community in May. They will help us achieve further savings, and more importantly help us deliver better services and support to our community. Members of staff who are proposed to be impacted in any way by these changes were invited to meetings with their managers and HR last week, along with townhall discussions. And I want to thank and acknowledge our staff for your professionalism as we navigate these conversations together. These proposals are now in active consultation with our community and as always, we welcome everyone’s input.
As many of you will be aware, the University leadership received an Open Letter from our community on 29 May. The letter has been shared with Council. The authors of the Open Letter sought information about University finances, and also workload plans which we have provided in our response. As we have made clear in our recent financial update, whilst we have collectively made progress to achieving a $100M reduction in our recurring salary costs, we still have nearly $50M of savings to achieve, and Change Proposals, including the ones we started last week, will be necessary. The response to the Open Letter is available on the Renew ANU website. And we will continue to share up-to-date information here as it becomes available.
Good thoughts to wherever this finds you, and again my heartfelt congratulations to our Honours List recipients!
