As exams loom around the corner and stress levels might be creeping, you might find solace in a hidden gem on campus – Drill Hall Gallery – situated right next to the ANU College of Business and Economics, and behind Student Life’s Kitchen Garden.
This gem is not only a showcase for exhibitions, but also a historical landmark. Originally built in 1940 to train soldiers for World War II, Drill Hall was transformed into an art gallery in 1984, and it has since become a key location for the Canberra community.
The Drill Hall Gallery features a fascinating, changing program of exhibitions that celebrate both Australian and international art – one exhibit currently on display is an ethereal exhibition by Australian-New Zealand artist Euan Macleod. Inspired by his immersive experiences at the Tasman Glacier, his large-scale pieces invite viewers to connect with nature. Macleod spent ten days camping near the glacier, capturing the landscape through a series of en plein air sketches, which evolved into the work present at the gallery. “You can see his response to the place and his impressions of it in these large and magnificent canvases,” shares the Gallery Director, Tony Oates.
In addition to contemporary exhibitions, the gallery is home to a section of the ANU art collection, which includes the iconic ‘Riverbend’ by Sidney Nolan. This captivating nine-panel panorama, celebrated and recognised as one of Canberra’s must-see art treasures, is displayed in the ‘Riverbend Room’, offering a unique opportunity to experience one of Australia’s most significant artworks.
The Drill Hall Gallery serves as a venue for both established and emerging artists, making it a must-visit for anyone curious about the arts. Whether you’re after a creative escape from your studies, or perhaps just looking to explore campus, the gallery provides a welcoming space to recharge and find inspiration.
