World Disco Soup Day

World Disco Soup Day is a global event that started 9 years ago in Berlin, Germany, known there as“Schnippeldisko”, a ‘protest soup’ against food waste that fed 8000 people!!

Since then, these events started to spread across the world as a fun, meaningful way to bring the food waste crisis into focus. Now, the Slow Food Youth Network promote the discussion on the topic of food waste and provide support to communities who want to host their own local events. This year, World Disco Soup Day will take place on Saturday 26th of April.

The Student Life team are hosting a World Disco Soup Day event on campus on Wednesday, 30 April 2025.

Stay tuned to find out more about how to get involved and help us fight food waste here at ANU and in Canberra.

Australia’s problem with food waste

Food waste is a major problem in Australia. It has significant environmental and economic impacts. The 2021 National Food Waste Strategy Feasibility Study reported:

  • Each year, Australians waste around 7.6 million tonnes of food across the food supply chain. This equates to about 312kg per person.
  • Food waste costs the Australian economy around $36.6 billion each year.
  • Food waste accounts for about 3% of Australia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Australia uses around 2,600 gigalitres of water to grow food that is wasted. This is equal to the water in 5 Sydney Harbours.
