Interim Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rebekah Brown warmly welcomed the appointment.

"I am delighted to welcome Professor Wyithe to this important leadership role," Professor Brown said.

"Stuart is an experienced academic leader whose work has shaped major national research initiatives and strengthened Australia's international research standing.

"He brings a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the research sector and will play a critical role in advancing the University's research and innovation agenda in a rapidly evolving global environment."

Professor Wyithe joined ANU in 2023 from the University of Melbourne, where he built a distinguished 20-year career as a researcher and academic leader. During his time at Melbourne, he served as Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and held several senior leadership appointments including Associate Dean (Research), Associate Dean (Graduate Research) and Head of the School of Physics.

He also served as Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO-3D), helping to strengthen Australia's leadership in astronomy and astrophysics research through large-scale national collaboration.

An internationally recognised astrophysicist, Professor Wyithe's research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. His contributions to the field have been recognised through numerous honours, including the Pawsey Medal and the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year.

Professor Wyithe has also made significant contributions to the broader research community through leadership roles including President of the Astronomical Society of Australia and Chair of the National Committee for Astronomy.

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Wyithe will lead the University's Research and Innovation portfolio, helping shape the University's contribution to national and global challenges through impactful research, innovation and collaboration.

Professor Wyithe said he was honoured to take up the role.

"ANU has an extraordinary research community and a unique national mission," he said.

"I'm excited to work with colleagues across the University to support research excellence, foster innovation and strengthen the impact of our research nationally and globally.

"I am also looking forward to leading the Portfolio in enhancing development opportunities for our researchers and helping drive new partnerships that leverage our strengths and mission.”

Outside the office, Professor Wyithe is an avid rock climber and trail runner.

He officially commenced in the role on Monday 18 May 2026.
